D. 202 distributing 6,700 laptops to PreK-3 students for remote learning

Plainfield District 202 will deliver about 6,700 laptops to pre-kindergarten through third grade students this week to use for remote learning.

The district bought the computers earlier this summer as part of its new remote learning program. District 202 started the 2020-21 school year on August 31, 2020 with all students in remote learning because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The computers will be distributed Thursday and Friday, October 15-16, 2020. Families will get specific details from their home schools.

The district also bought 10,000 laptops earlier this summer for 4th-12th graders to use for remote learning. Both purchases together cost about $7 million.

District 202’s PreK-3rd grade remote learning curriculum does not require a computer for students to participate, however, families have requested laptops for their younger students as well.

District 202 recently started the process to slowly return students to in-person learning in small, age and need-based groups when it is safe to do so and as conditions allow. Multi-needs special education students will return on October 26, 2020.

Preschool and kindergarten students are scheduled to return the week of November 2, 2020. Older students will come back between mid-November and mid-January 2021. Each group’s return will depend on the successful return of the prior group.

District officials continue to monitor numerous criteria including:

  • health metrics
  • safety guidelines
  • the availability of safety and cleaning supplies
  • regular and substitute staffing
  • community input
